A WARNING FOR TRAVELLERS ON THE SS7 QU

It has come to our notice that there are two men travelling on the SS7QU near Naples who are claiming to be policemen, and they are stopping unwary tourists and robbing them of their money and valuables.

At about 2 km from the junction with the SS7bis travelling south, Chris and Valerie Coram who were heading for Paestum, (as they do very often) in their camper, were stopped by two men in an unmarked car, who showed them a Police badge and ordered them to stop in a nearby lay by.

One of the men got out of the car, while the other remained at the wheel. He approached the couple, who didn’t know why they had been stopped, as they were not speeding or in fact doing anything wrong on a very quiet road. Showing his “badge” again he explained to them in perfect English that they had been having some bother with young English boys and drugs. He then told them that they were on the lookout for counterfeit notes, which had a certain serial number. He then asked to see Chris’s driving license, which unfortunately for the couple was in the safe of the camper. Chris moved to the back of the camper and opened the safe, just to be followed by the “policeman”, who noticed money in the safe. Asking to see the money to check it for the serial numbers, Chris handed the money over. The “policeman” looked through the notes, and assured Chris that they were okay, and he placed them back into the safe. The he asked what was in another box in the safe, and Valerie replied that they were her jewels, he looked through them and replaced them. He then wished them a good journey shook their hands ( a very cold and wet handshake) and left.

All this time Valerie had been sitting in the front of the camper, and worrying, not sure that things were as they seemed, so she looked for a pen to write down the number plate of the car, but before she could find a pen the car had disappeared.

All the way to Paestum, they thought about what had happened, and they still weren’t sure that things were normal. So once they arrived at their destination, they opened up the safe, only to find that about 60% of their money was missing, along with a gold bracelet.

They told the owner of the campsite, who said that he would take them to the local Carabinieri the next day.

They went the next day to make their statements to the Carabinieri, who obviously couldn’t guarantee anything.

The car in question was a small grey Fiat.

The false policeman was well built, about 6 ft in height, short black hair, combed back, age around 35-40, wearing a dark blue suit, with a white shirt and pale blue tie and brown shoes. He spoke perfect English, and was a perfect gentleman.

The driver of the car never got out, so he could not be described.

This all happened on the 25th of April, Easter Monday, at around 2 pm. So the road was very quiet at the time.

So this must be a warning to all foreigners who are travelling on the roads in Italy.

YOU WILL NEVER BE STOPPED BY AN UNMARKED POLICE CAR.

THE AGENTS WILL ALWAYS BE IN UNIFORM.
